Blue Orchid Peacock or Kande Island Peacock

Aulonocara kandeensis

Peacocks are generally the most sought after African cichlids from Lake Malawi.  Most fish in the genus tend to be much easier-going than the mbuna.  Since Peacocks can readily interbreed please take care as to not house more than one species of Aulonocara in each aquarium.  These fish start off as silver-grey juveniles with the males turning into the fish pictured above.  The more dominant the fish is in the aquarium the better he will color.  These are easy to breed mouthbrooding cichlids.  The female holds the eggs in her mouth for approximately 18-21 days before small fry emerge.  If spooked, the fry may return to the brooding mother for a week or so, when needed.

These fish are easily fed high quality dry foods and occasional frozen foods such as brineshrimp, mysis, or plankton.
