Oscar - Astronotus ocellatus

The Oscar has been a staple in the hobby for several decades and is available in many color morphs.  It is an easy/moderate fish to keep in a large community tank with many other types of cichlids and non-cichlids!  It tends not to bother any fish it cannot fit into it's mouth. It's main diet however is small fish and invertebrates.  In our opinion the best way to keep it from becoming overly aggressive is to feed pellet and frozen food only and never live fish.  These are quite intelligent creatures that can be trained to do tricks.

Max Size 14" normal 18" sometimes
Recommended Tank Size 70 gal
Temperature  Range 72-78
pH Range 6.0-8.0
Origin Amazon River basin, South America

Diet Carnivore
Community Safe? Yes, but with fish of similar size and attitudes.
